2024 Storytelling in the Age of AI Simulation

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

Convening at CNN’s state-of-the-art hub in Abu Dhabi in December 2024, almost 150 aspiring and emerging journalists from around the world engaged in a dynamic and immersive journalism simulation focused on storytelling in the age of AI.

About this simulation

This third edition of the CNN Academy simulation aimed to test and refine the skills of the participants in a world where disinformation on social media is commonplace. Set in a fictional country, this multi-faceted exercise engaged trainees in a realistic news environment with the story unfolding in real time over a week.

The selected storytellers attend a comprehensive media training program delivered by CNN Academy that covered various aspects of reporting in the age of AI.

The CNN Academy simulation, designed in collaboration with Prof. Rex Brynen of McGill University and Jim Wallman of Stone Paper Scissors, delved into a simulated scenario in a fictional country. This dynamic exercise unfolded in real-time, providing trainees with a realistic news environment to test and refine their skills.

What they learned

Engaging in real-time newsgathering, participants utilized a custom-built social media tool and attended mock press conferences and interviews. Each team was challenged to craft a comprehensive news package by the end of the week, using content captured on their phones and leveraging mobile journalism training provided beforehand.

Beyond the simulation, participants benefited from masterclasses by CNN experts on scriptwriting, field production, shooting in the field, deepfakes, and communicating in the age of AI. This comprehensive approach ensures participants acquire a diverse skill set vital for navigating the complexities of modern journalism.

CNN Academy’s simulations transcend traditional journalism training, providing a transformative experience that combines real-world challenges, international collaboration, and a commitment to addressing pressing global issues.

For the first time, a U.S. contingent of 24 students took part in this year’s simulation, thanks to an exciting new partnership with Delta Air Lines.

Drawn from Georgia Tech, Howard University, University of Florida, and Georgia State University, the students were paired up with other participants from around the word and immersed into the full simulation experience.

They also got a chance to explore the United Arab Emirates and all that it has to offer, including trips to Dubai and the desert.
