Eric Cheung

Eric Cheung is an award-winning field producer for CNN, based at the network’s Taipei bureau. He is responsible for covering breaking news and feature stories in Taiwan and beyond.

Cheung has regularly produced exclusive reports from Taiwan, including securing an interview with President Tsai Ing-wen in 2021, which made headlines worldwide. He has also travelled extensively across the region – from Hawaii to Singapore and Japan – covering high-impact stories including a rare embed aboard a US nuclear-powered submarine at Pearl Harbor, and a scoop revealing expansions at nuclear test sites operated by China, Russia and the US.

Cheung regularly produces TV packages for the network’s top-rated prime-time shows, including Erin Burnett OutFront and The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer. He also writes enterprise and analysis pieces on a wide range of topics, including cross-strait relations, Taiwan’s diplomacy and defense, and the semiconductor industry.

Prior to this role, Cheung was a newsdesk producer for CNN’s international newsgathering team, based at the network’s Asia-Pacific headquarters in Hong Kong. He played an instrumental role in CNN’s coverage of Hong Kong’s political development – including the 2019 pro-democracy protests and the subsequent introduction of a national security law – and was part of the team that won a Royal Television Society Award in the Breaking News category.

Cheung received an Emmy award as part of the team covering Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. He has also served as a lead mentor for the CNN Academy in Abu Dhabi which conducts workshops and trains the next generation of multimedia journalists.

Before joining CNN, Cheung’s work appeared in Rest of World, The Guardian, Reuters, and ABC News. He graduated with a degree in journalism and politics from the University of Hong Kong. He is fluent in English, Cantonese and Mandarin.
